Navy team meets locals assures to take precautions in future

MARGAO: The Indian Navy on Thursday assured the locals of Carmona that henceforth they will take precaution with regard to naval firing, as panic struck amongst the residents of Xhiro ward of Carmona. It has been also revealed that the shells which have fallen down were not of land firing training but of aircraft firing drill conducted by the Navy. Locals from Carmona have also informed that the Navy has assured them about the safety measures. Navy team visited the place where the shells have fallen down and also discussed the issue with the locals and panch members of the Carmona Panchayat. Sources from the Navy have informed that henceforth they will alert the citizens if any firing drill is conducted in the area. Navy too are surprised how the shells have gone beyond the range at the time of firing drill by the aircraft.

It may be noted on Tuesday evening people noticed that empty shells from naval firing landed in the residential areas. Few shells were even penetrated into the tiled roofs as well as on the road. Thereafter people rushed to the Colva police station urging to help them. Speaking to reporters, Francisco D'Costa said, "We are very much worried about the safety of people and especially of our children. Because some of the shells landed on the residential houses," he stated. Another woman from the same locality also said that concerned authorities should help us with regard to the safety of the people. "Tomorrow the shells may hurt us or our children, and hence earlier precautions are needed," she urged. Soon after hearing the news of the panicky situation of the locals on Thursday Navy team rushed at the site and took stock of the incident. Carmonkars had faced a similar incident some 10 years ago, some were even injured at that time. The same thing happened once again on Tuesday at 5 in the morning. The women were just getting up to prepare breakfast when the shells rained down.
