Christmas is indeed the best time of the year. The twinkling lights lining the streets, the aroma of hot chocolate and scenes of families reuniting, it's as if the season brings along all the joy and laughter not shared during the rest of the year.

While every corner of the world celebrates the season with unique traditions, Goa does too. If you're planning a Christmas getaway in Goa or have just arrived in the State, here are some recommendations to celebrate the holiday season the Goan way.

RELISH SWEETS OF THE SEASON

The season demands you keep your diet plans aside and dive right into all the sweetness. When in Goa, savouring homemade festive specials like the darkish coconut-jaggery sweet dodol, deep fried neureos, fudgy doce, layered bebinca or the melt-in-the mouth bolinhas is an absolute must.

UNWRAP DELICIOUSNESS

Food isn’t just the path to the heart, it’s the gateway to familiarise yourself with the culture of a place, and Christmas is the best time to learn about Goa’s culinary treasures.

On December 25, Catholic homes line up elaborate dishes. These aren’t limited to pulao, roast, sorpotel, stuffed chicken or turkey, and beef roulade, which are devoured by the whole family. Many hotels and restaurants list tasty Goan flavours and host luxurious banquets.

RECOMMENDATION: For an unforgettable day, reserve your spot at Double Tree by Hilton Goa’s Christmas brunch (Panjim) or Novotel Goa's Christmas brunch (Candolim).

EXPLORE SPARKLY MAGIC

At peak season, Goan markets and stores get a complete makeover with colourful stars dangling overhead, the nativity sets on display and the many decorative items that tempt you to empty your pockets.

But it’s when night falls that most wander around street corners to witness the magic. The dazzling Christmas lights cast their glow and what a sight of local creativity it is--massive cribs along the way depicting the joy and wonder of the season.
