The word ‘ceramic’ comes from the Greek word keramikos, meaning ‘of pottery’ or ‘for pottery’. The earliest ceramics were pottery and figurines made from clay and klin-fired. Later, they were glazed to create a smooth surface.

The oldest known ceramic artifact dates back to 28000 BCE. Ceramics were first made in China in a primitive form during the Tang dynasty (618–907) and spread to the West during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) and onto Japan, Russia and the Far East, where archaeologists found shards of ceramic dating to 14000 BCE.

THE ARTIST, THE ART

Cube Gallery, in Moira, is currently displaying ceramic sculptures by Flavius Valone Pisapia, an Italian-Romanian artist, born in Bucharest, in 1981, who describes his work as “Organic, harmonious, movement, pure form and process of emergence from the unknown.”

“I am inspired by the sculptors of the early twentieth century, whose work opens up a new world of pure form which are non-representational, evoking shapes of the natural world complete in themselves, without replicating them. The most important aspect of my artwork is the process of emergence.”

Artists who inspire him include Constantin Brancusi, Hans Arp and Henry Moore, and he draws inspiration from sculpture studios, galleries, museums and sculpture parks. Flavius believes that, “It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses, saturating my imagination with its various aspects and visual qualities.”

When exploring an idea for a sculpture, he draws it, makes models, going a step further in a listening space, engages in an inner conversation with the emerging artistic qualities of the initial idea, and goes through three stages: Imagination, inspiration and intuition.

He prefers to surprise himself and grow with his art from the inside out, instead of working with a fixed idea, inviting a discovery of pure form. Sculptures varying in colour from red, blue, slate grey, white, with its own affinity to abstraction subsequently hint subtly to communicate a story, thought or feeling, with soft and hard edges. Its capacious ability retains viscosity, thus becoming an image, a sign, in abstraction of visual ideograms, that convey multifarious possibilities with ambiguous meanings. “The point when I feel myself one with the object also denotes an artistic breakthrough, radiating a healthy energy in our lives and in our environment through my art.”
