Panaji: Graduating to the higher echelon of Sports, Pearl Covalcar from Goa has received the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Purushkar for her skills in Skiff Sailing from the hands of the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"I am honoured and privileged to receive this prestigious award. Its my dream to represent India in World Championship. Currently my goal is to take part in Asian Games," Pearl Colvalcar told in an exclusive interview with GT/WEEKENDER. Starting off at an early age of 10, under the mentorship of Cdr SP Singh, Pearl found her passion and got allied with the waters. According to her, water is where she develops her skills and it lets her be. Currently, she is coached by Derek Menezes. "The moment I see water, it gives me tranquillity. The waves lapping on the shore makes me feel calm. I feel like a free dolphin in the water," said the multi-talented 13-years-old. Growing up right next to the beach also made her aware about the marine environment. On her visit and fifteen minutes chat with Prime Minister Narendra Modi she urged to be a part of Plastic Ban campaign. "I am not a person who is devoured into books but also loves playing with nature. Nature always gives back. The Sea is my second parent," she said. "Goa has clean water compared to the other part of the country. We have nice wind condition too. Definitely, I would like to see more regatta happening in Goa seas so that the children from other state can also benefit," Pearl added. Coming from a family of doctors, Pearl often has to juggle with extra-curricular activities and academics. Her father Dr Milind Colvalkar is a Gynaecologist by profession while her mother Dr Tejashri Colvalkar runs IVF Angles Goa.

"Following proper routine is an ongoing struggle. I am occupied with studies and struggling with my fitness. But I make sure that I eat healthy," Pearl answered when she was enquired about discipline. Besides her exceptional talent in board sailing and windsurfing, Pearl has also been awarded the distinction certificate from Trinity college of Music for her professional training in Piano, Guitar and Harmonium. She is proficient in German and Portuguese too. Expressing her joy, Pearl's mother, Dr Tejashree said, "I am really proud as a parent. First time in my life I have been to Rashtrapati Bhavan Darbar hall and witnessed the ceremony closely. Its because of her, I could meet the Prime Minister and the President of India."
