Former Congress leader and Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequiera on Tuesday, January 25, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Goa Assembly elections.

He was inducted by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and state BJP chief Sadanand Tanavade into the party.

Earlier, Sequeira had joined Trinamool Congress. However, he said that he has already withdrawn his support to the TMC.

While announcing his induction into the party, CM Sawant said, "Former Sarpanch of Calangute, Joseph Sequeira has joined BJP today. We have strengthened our party again in Calangute and definitely, we are winning the upcoming Assembly elections in Goa."

The Chief Minister took a swipe at his former cabinet colleague Michael Lobo, who recently quit the party along with his wife Deliah to join Congress ahead of assembly elections for `giving priority to wife over the country'.

"He was reportedly seeking a BJP ticket for his wife from Siolim constituency but was spurned. We work with the philosophy of `nation first, the state first', while he has his priority as patni pratham (wife first)," Sawant said.

"Even in his dreams, he wants his wife to be Minister but I think people of Siolim are smart and have self-respect. Siolim people will definitely teach him a lesson and now Calangute people will also teach him a lesson," Sawant added.

Joseph Sequeira said Lobo backstabbed the sample who helped him get elected. "He has backstabbed the same people who helped him win elections. For the last 10 years, I have been watching him talk against his own party. I think he has one screw -ess in his head," Sequira said.

Meanwhile, Sawant claimed that the BJP will win more than 22 seats in the 40-member Goa Assembly in the February 14 polls.

"People of Goa has seen the work done under Double engine government. BJP is the first party to submit reporter card to the people. Till today no party has submitted such report cards. In the double engine government, you can see the growth like super speciality hospital, Sada-Varunapuri highway, Zuari bridge. When we say acche din, these are acche din and people know everything and those who cannot see should open their eyes and see again," he said.
