Congress strength in Assembly down to 3 as Ponda MLA Ravi Naik resigns, will join BJP

This will be his second time joining the BJP Party after the 2000 elections.

In an another setback to the Congress Party ahead of Goa Assembly elections, former Chief Minister and Ponda MLA Ravi Naik resigned from the assembly and will be joining the BJP later in the day.

The veteran leader handed over his resignation to Speaker Rajesh Patnekar along with his sons on Tuesday, December 7.

Ravi Naik returns to BJP fold after quitting the saffron party in 2002.

He had started his political career with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and later on joined Congress. He was the chief Minister of Goa from 25 January 1991 to 18 May 1913 and then again from 2 April 1994 to 8 April 1994. he had previously joined BJP in October 2000 and later on left the party and joined Congress.

Meanwhile, Congress's strength in the current assembly has been reduced to 3. The grand old party which had won 17 seats in the 2017 Assembly elections, is left with 3 MLAs.
