In Mormugao taluka, the hue of political campaigning has increased as the assembly elections are approaching. A total of eight candidates are in the fray this election.
Former MLA and Mormugao BJP candidate Milind Naik, who has dominated the Mormugao constituency in the last three assembly elections from 2007 to 2017, is looking to win the seat for the fourth consecutive time.
In the last three assembly elections, only Congress and BJP have been the main contenders for the seat. In the 2017 Assembly elections, Milind Naik of BJP won the seat by defeating Sankalp Amonkar from Indian National Congress with a margin of 140 votes. Milind fought against Sankalp Amonkar and Parashuram Sonurlekar, who contested as an independent candidate.
Parashuram Sonurlekar of the Aam Aadmi Party, Jayesh Shetgaonkar of the Goa Trinamool Congress, Independent candidate Nilesh Navelkar, Xeque Mahamod Acbar of the Nationalist Congress Party and Independent candidate Enayatulla Khan are among the other candidates running for the Goa Assembly in 2022.
Aam Aadmi Party's Parashuram Sonurlekar is contesting the Assembly elections for the second time. Sonurlekar is recognised all over Goa for raising his voice against illegal activities and for speaking out against the government.
Goa Trinamool Congress candidate Jayesh Shetgaonkar is also well-known in the rural areas and is currently receiving a growing response while Independent candidate Nilesh Navelkar has also made significant strides in the election campaign.
