Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Nuvem, Wilfred D'sa, resigned from the Goa Assembly on Wednesday, January 19. He will resign resigned from the party, becoming the fifth BJP legislator to leave the party ahead of next month's Goa Assembly elections.
After submitting his resignation to the Speaker’s office, Almeida told reporters he will contest as an independent candidate from the Nuvem constituency. "I have resigned as a BJP MLA and as the election are approaching I have decided to contest independently. I will also go to the BJP office and resigned from primary membership as well," he said.
"I had a meeting with my well-wisher and supporters and they asked not to contest from BJP," he added.
On being asked whether people are not happy with BJP, he said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant always supported him and fulfilled his demands. "More than Rs 120 crore development was carried out in Nuvem," he said.
Although BJP's candidate list will come out on Wednesday, D'sa said BJP will field a candidate from Nuvem.
With Wilfred’s exit, BJP has lost five of its sitting MLAs.
