Goa women's badminton player Sandhya Melasheemi won a bronze medal at the Elpozo BWF World Senior Badminton Championship in Huelva, Spain on Monday, December 6.
The Indian pair has advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament after defeating Sabin Froelich-Christian Klitsch 21-11, 21-4 in the quarterfinals.
However, Sandhya and Sangeeta Mari had to settle for the bronze medal after losing 21-14, 22-20 to second-seeded Danish duo of Gry Uhrenholt Hermansen and Helle Kaempegaard in the semi-finals.
Sandhya had also reached the quarterfinals in the women's singles over 35 group but lost to French Audrey Petit. In the men's over 65 age group, Tanaji Sawant and Pradip Dhond from Goa also advanced to the semi-finals. They lost to the Russian pair 21-14, 28-26.
The Goa Badminton Association congratulated Sandhya on winning a bronze medal in the World Masters Badminton Championships. Sandhya is a former state champion of Goa, currently playing in the Masters' group.
"This is an incredible achievement of a very hard-working player," said Sandeep Heble, secretary of the association. Sandhya has won three gold medals at the last National Masters' Badminton Championships in Jaipur.
