PANAJI: Skipper Amit Verma and wicketkeeper-batsman Smit Patel joined the run feast with unbeaten centuries as Goa were poised for a record fifth victory in this season’s Ranji Trophy. After posting a mammoth 589 for two declared in their first innings, Goa had their opponents Arunachal Pradesh by the scruff of the neck at the GCCA ground, Porvorim. Arunachal Pradesh were made to follow on after being bowled out for a paltry 83 and in their second stanza, too, there seemed to be no respite for the visitors as they finished the day at 19 for three with the writing on the wall writ large. With two full days remaining and Arunachal appearing like novices at this level of cricket as they occupy the bottom place in the 10-team Plate Group with just three points, Goa has the opportunity to laugh all the way to the finish line. Goa has 30 points from six matches played before this home encounter as they are placed second behind Puducherry (33). When play resumed on the second day, Goa were 376 for two after the opening day saw centuries by openers Sumiran Amonkar (160) and Vaibhav Govekar (160). Smit on 32 and Verma on 14 began the proceedings and went about the job freely to notch up their individual milestones. Smit was unbeaten on 137(148b, 10x4, 3x6) and Amit was unconquered on 122 (118b, 4x4, 4x6) when he declared the innings. The visitors displayed inept batting against Goa’s bowling attack with Amit, himself, in tandem with Darshan Misal, wreaking havoc with the ball. While Misal captured four for 24, the skipper had three for only two runs. Amulya Pandrekar claimed two for 19 and Vijesh Prabhudesai accounted for the other wicket. For Arunachal, Kamsha Yangfo was the top scorer with 22 while Rahul Dalal 16 and Takam Tallam (14) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures. With Goa enforcing the follow-on, the visitors continued in similar vein with Amit taking all the three wickets to fall in their innings. Brief Scores: Goa (overnight 376-2): 589 for 2 decl in 124 overs (Sumiran Amonkar 160, Vaibhav Govekar 160, Smit Patel 137 not out, Amit Verma 122 not out). Arunachal (1st innings): 83 all out in 43.5 overs (Kamsha Yangfo 22; Darshan Misal 4-24, Amit Verma 3-2, Amulya Pandrekar 2-19). Arunachal (2nd innings): 19-3 in 10 overs (Amit Verma 3-3)
