Goa tiatr review: Old wine, new message in ‘Sasumaim, Dhuv …?’

Sammy Tavares’ latest monsoon 'tiatr' revolves around mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships; but beyond the drama, it delivers a meaningful message about family bonds and resilience

Retired SP, Sammy Tavares, presents his monsoon tiatr, Sasumaim, Dhuv vo Sun?, which explores intricate family bonds, particularly the relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.

The tiatrSasumaim, Dhuv vo Sun? centres on the strained dynamics between a mother-in-law (Roma), her daughter-in-law Samaira (Antonette de Maina), and her only son Mark (Franky Gonsalves), with Mark’s maternal uncle (comedian Sally) also living in the same household.

ABOUT THE TIATR

Coming from a poor background, Samaira finds unwavering support in her husband Mark, who stands by his gentle-natured wife at every step. However, their bond becomes a source of resentment for Mark’s mother, leading her to relentlessly harass Samaira.

Despite the challenges, Mark remains protective, defending his wife whenever necessary — even going so far as to disguise himself as a woman to shoulder her responsibilities.

At times, it may seem as though Mark sides with his mother, but in truth, he quietly supports Samaira. With his moral backing, Samaira gathers the strength to face each day and endure her struggles.

The situation worsens when Mark’s married sister, Samica (Samica), returns to live with her mother after leaving her in-laws in an old-age home. Teaming up with her mother, Samica becomes overbearing and begins imposing her will on Samaira.

What follows is a wave of accusations and harassment from both mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

In this tug-of-war of love and loyalty, the question remains — who will ultimately emerge as the real winner in the family?

BEHIND THE SCENES

While the theme of this tiatr isn’t new and has been explored by many directors before, Tavares brings focus to the continuing struggles within Goan families, reminding us that the victim ultimately comes out on top.

Every artiste performs well on stage, but Roma stands out as the ruthless mother-in-law, while Antonette de Maina’s portrayal of the modest daughter-in-law wins over the audience with ease.

FAMILY DRAMA: In 'Sasumaim, Dhuv vo Sun?', Sammy Tavares focuses on the struggles within Goan families.

Franky and Lawry Travasso provide strong support to the lead actors. Samica impresses in her double roles, shining as a comedienne, though her serious dialogue delivery leaves much to be desired.

For plenty of laughs, comedian Sally, along with David, Myron, Samica, Juvenile and Raymond, deliver a series of hilarious moments that keep the audience thoroughly entertained.

In the musical segment, teenager Joshua Pereira from Agassaim opens the show, stylishly walking from the audience to the stage with a trumpet in hand. Solos are performed by Jr Reagan, Sammy Tavares, Lawry Travasso, Joshua de Agassaim and Roma.

Three songs performed by Myron and David, along with a political track by Saby de Divar, and a duet by Lawry Travasso and Saby de Divar, were met with enthusiastic encores.
