In the heart of Parra, in North Goa, Whalesong is not just a gallery, but a celebration of the State’s vibrant culture, rich history and its timeless beauty.
It is a unique space created by co-founder Sonal Chowdhary and her team where art, design and lifestyle seamlessly blend, offering a curated experience that resonates with the very essence of Goa.
Whalesong caters to those seeking to adorn their homes with curated, unique pieces of furniture and art.
The gallery captures Goa’s free-spirited vibe, with its expansive skies, rich textures and a deeply ingrained connection to nature. This influence is evident in every piece, from furniture to art, that is on display and sale.
“Goa is a state of mind, and Whalesong is defined by that,” says Sonal as she describes Goa. “The sense of freedom you experience here helps you redefine your sensibilities."
"Goa is multilayered, and we are the gatekeepers of memories from another life. It’s the perfect landscape for our design language,” she adds.
Whalesong also pays homage to Goa’s history through the works displayed there.
“This stunning photograph of St Francis,” by Shahid Datawala, Sonal points out, “and our series called ‘House of God’ featuring photographs by Sheena Sippy of Goan churches, are an integral parts of the gallery.”
These pieces highlight Goa’s religious architecture, while the altar, made from old, Goan woodwork, adds another layer to Whalesong’s aesthetics. “Religion and woodwork from Goa are a part of the Whalesong experience,” she adds, further grounding the gallery in the region’s history.
Whalesong’s furniture designs are a reflection of Goa’s unique architectural blend.
“We love Goa, and each space inspires us — from the colours to the textures,” Sonal explains. The gallery seamlessly blends timeless objects, art and mid-century modern designs with black and white photography, creating an eclectic, yet harmonious, visual language.
“We believe one must invest in 'desire' and look for precious things that make us lust for life,” says Sonal.
Sustainability is a cornerstone of Whalesong. “We work with local artisans and draw inspiration from the colours and patterns we find in Mapusa market,” says Sonal who visits the market quite often.
Whalesong embraces Goa’s bohemian culture by using eco-friendly materials and preserving the region’s tradition.
“Bohemian afternoons in paradise,” as Sonal describes it, are the very essence of this space, where visitors can immerse themselves in the artistry of Goa.
As Whalesong turns three this year, it continues to host exhibitions, pop-ups, and workshops that bring together artists and visitors to explore the best of Goa’s artistic offerings.
CREATING A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE
Whalesong is more than a gallery, it’s an experience. “It’s a playground for artists and designers,” says Sonal, who ensures that each visitor leaves with a deeper appreciation for Goa’s art scene.
As Whalesong turns three this year, it continues to host exhibitions, pop-ups, and workshops that bring together artists and visitors to explore the best of Goa’s artistic offerings.
Whalesong serves as a platform to preserve and promote Goan heritage through contemporary art.
“Goa is a time capsule, and we want to keep it that way,” says Sonal. By nurturing a space that blends luxury, design and art, Whalesong creates a sanctuary for those looking to connect with Goa’s timeless spirit while embracing modern creativity.
Whalesong is truly a place where Goa’s rich culture, history and artistic flair converge, offering visitors an unforgettable journey through the region’s creative landscape.
