Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, on Friday, extended his greetings to
the Goan people on Goa Revolution Day. June 18 is commemorated
annually as Goa Revolution Day. On this day in 1946, Goans started a
peaceful revolt against the Portuguese colonial regime.
The Chief Minister said, “Goa Revolution Day marks the beginning of
Goa's freedom movement, and every Goan voluntarily participated in it.
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr. Giuliao Menezes, with their fearless
speeches against the tyrannical rule of the Portuguese, raised the
spirits of the people of Goa. The spark was ignited by Dr. Lohia, at
Margao, mustered the courage needed to oppose the dictatorship.
Finally, on December 19, 1961, after 450 years of Portuguese rule, Goa
was liberated.”
“On this sacred occasion, let's pay homage to known and unknown
freedom fighters, who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of Goa.
Thanks to the sacrifices of these great souls, Goa is booming today as
a prosperous welfare state,” he added.
“Let us continue to contribute to making Goa an ideal state. Let's all join hands and strive to safeguard this hard-won freedom and dedicate ourselves to further progress. On this occasion, I pay my respects to the freedom fighters,” Dr. Sawant concluded.
