AAP's 'broom' symbol for party candidates: SEC

PANAJI: With the State Election Commission (SEC) clarifying that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates will be allotted the party’s ‘broom’ symbol, AAP general secretary Pradeep Padgaonkar said that Goa seriously needs the ‘broom’ to sweep the dirt of defection, corruption, communalisation, and criminalization of politics that has soiled the fabric of the State.

AAP had earlier written to the State Election Commission citing lack of instructions to returning officers about allocation of the party symbol. AAP had claimed that the symbol ‘broom’ was not a free symbol but frozen by the Chief Election Commission (CEC) for AAP. The SEC has since issued circular clarifying doubts expressed by returning officers.

Meanwhile, Padgaonkar informed that party candidates Smita Shet (Aldona), Mario Cordeiro (Socorro), Manuel Cardoz (Calangute) and Godfrey D'Lima (Sirsaim) filed their nomination papers from their respective constituencies in North Goa district on Wednesday.

Similarly, Hanzel Fernandes (Benaulim), Dinesh Borkar (Borim), Matilda D'Silva (Navelim), Brinda Silva (Curtorim), Pobres Vaz (Cortalim), Marcelina Colaco (Nuvem), Rodolfina Vaz (Guirdolim), Sandeep Naik (Rivona) and Richardson Colaco (Shiroda) filed their nominations in South Goa district.

Meanwhile, there are reports that two prominent Congress members are likely to join AAP on Thursday morning and they are likely to be fielded by the party as their candidates for the ZP elections. When contacted, Padgaonkar hinted that more AAP candidates will file their nominations on Thursday, March 5, which is the last day to file nomination papers for ZP polls.
