MARGAO: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has said that the arrest of MLA Rohan Khaunte at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again shown that the MLAs elected by the people are more suited to be circus artists.
AAP convenor Elvis Gomes addressing media persons said that people were getting to see circus rather than any meaningful governance in the state. However, Gomes considered action of the Speaker of the house in allowing the arrest of Khaunte for an alleged incident in the precincts of the house as deplorable.
“Arrest was not warranted. The police could have been allowed to commence investigations if at all any act of criminal nature as alleged was committed. In fact, a debate should start in the legislative assembly whether the power to arrest is being misused for political ends. We do not support the arrest”, said Gomes.
At the same time, Gomes came down heavily on the opposition MLAs who were showing signs of ‘pseudo unity’ only because a colleague MLA was arrested though without justification.
Gomes said that the conduct of some of the same MLAs who first propped up the BJP government without mandate was shameful. These MLAs did not show any enthusiasm in the common man’s fight to save Goa from the BJP's game plan of foisting an ill-conceived CZMP, fight against coal pollution, fight to protect Mahadei waters, fight against rivers nationalization and fight against SEZs.
“The cry of the so-called united opposition is a drama. In totality, it is a circus. Did Goa deserve this circus or good governance is a question that Goans will have to answer”, said Gomes.
He further added that the government has suppressed investigations into a number of scams which the then BJP of Parrikar was tom-toming about. He asked, “8 years in power, the BJP has fooled everyone regarding scams. Mining, power, excise, HSRP, RP, ODP’s, water tanks, Louis Berger and SEZ are a few of them”.
Gomes further added that some of the ‘united opposition’ MLAs were close to the BJP. He said that only those dropped from the cabinet were feeling the heat now being out of power. The others whose counterparts had migrated into the BJP to avoid prosecution in the heinous criminal cases they are involved in such as extortion, rape, matka, disproportionate assets, etc were having a good understanding in which the common man was left high and dry.
