PANAJI: The United Opposition on Thursday said that they will not allow the State Legislative Assembly to function till the BJP spokesperson Premanand Mahambrey is arrested. Based on Mahambrey’s complaint, police had arrested Khaunte and later released him on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons at a joint press conference of Opposition MLAs, Goa Forward Party president and MLA Vijai Sardesai said, “We had met the Speaker before coming to the Assembly. We had verbally lodged a complaint with the Speaker. Based on a false complaint, an MLA has been arrested. We did not know that the Speaker had granted his permission. When we learnt about it, we were shocked. The Speaker should have sought a report whether the allegations in the form of a complaint that were lodged by the complainant are true or not. Because in the House, the Speaker is supposed to be our guardian. It appears that the Speaker is coming upder pressure and is doing things which he should not be doing. During the assembly session just after being attacked continuously and exposed for the last three days, the government is frustrated and desperate and doing things which are completely contrary to law and the Constitution.”

“Our demand is that we are asking for the arrest of the person who has given a false complaint and has led to an arrest of our colleague. That has to be considered. Till the Speaker does not allow this, we will not allow the house to function,” said Sardesai.

Speaking at the press conference, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said, “All businesses are legal. I am presently providing employment to more than 200 Goans and we are ensuring that all businesses are carried out in legal entities.”

Speaking about the alleged incident, he said, “In the evening yesterday, myself and Rane were walking out together and Digambar was ahead of us. After the session we were just having a casual out. At that time, Mahambre again came so I just casually said that you should have come with better disclosures and walked away.”

“At 9 pm there was a press conference of BJP which I dont know what happened but they decided to say that assault happened. The incident was right outside CM’s office where everyone is there. Luckily for me Rane was there. After the press conference, they lodged a complaint that I assaulted. Then I had police coming at 1 pm to arrest me,” he said.

“CM is using his cronies to hide the inefficiency that he is showing on the floor of the House,” said Khaunte.
