Dealers condemn govt decision to open retail liquor sale

VASCO: The Vasco liquor dealers have strongly condemned the government's decision to open retail sale of liquor in packed bottles at the Dabolim airport terminal. "We. the dealers of Vasco are mainly dependent on the sale of liquor from tourists travelling by flights from Dabolim and trains from Vasco da Gama railway station," said Joaquim Rodrigues, a liquor dealer from Vasco. "In 2012 when a liquor shop was opened at the airport we had a drastic decrease on our daily sale. We had then approached the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and had explained him of our problems faced due to the shop inside the terminal building. Parrikar had then immediately acted by shutting the liquor shop at the airport building which was affecting all Goan traders," said Rodrigues. Now it is leant that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, who holds excise portfolio wants to grant a licence at Dabolim airport terminal building by reversing the decision of the former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Rodrigues said alleging that Dr Sawant was destroying the legacy of late Parrikar. Another liquor dealer Francis Monteiro also strongly disagreed with the decision of the State government and said that it will lead to huge unemployment and they will have to downsize their staff. It will directly impact the bread and butter of a common Goan man for the benefit of a corporate Delhi businessman, he alleged. A delegation of Vasco liquor dealers had earlier met Chief Minister M Dr Pramod Sawant and he had assured them that he will look into the matter, Monteiro said, hoping that Dr Sawant will come to the rescue of small liquor traders in the port town.
