VASCO: Fibre boats built for the coastal police stations were gutted in a massive fire at the Shirodkar yard in Thana-Cortalim on Sunday evening. Though the exact cause of fire is not known, the loss is estimated to be around lakhs of rupees. Three fire tenders from Vasco, Verna and Margao were rushed to the spot and brought the devastating fire under control. Fibre boats and other items such as moulds were completely destroyed in the fire. One of the fibre boats which was gutted in the fire was ready for delivery to the Goa coastal police. It remained in the yard due to the lockdown. Also a boat was partly damaged in the fire. According to information given by shipyard owner Sameer Shirodkar, he had given the yard on a contract to a person, who was building the fibre boats. He said that he was inside the house when he heard the noise and saw fire in the shipyard. He immediately informed the Verna fire station even as he rushed to the yard to save the property in vain. Shirodkar said that there were two fibre boats in the yard of which one was partly damaged. A big fibre boat and a mould was completely destroyed. There were generators also but total loss due to fire can be assessed by the contractor running the yard, he added. The Verna fire station informed that they received a call at around 5:30 pm and they immediately informed the Vasco fire station since the Verna fire brigade had gone to extinguish fire caught to a cashew plantation at Sancoale. The Verna fire personnel along with fire tender immediately rushed to the spot and tried to put out the blaze. Since the fire was devastating, fire tenders from Verna and Margao fire stations too rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control by using foam.
