The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) domestic cylinder was hiked again by Rs 25 on Tuesday.

With effect from August 17, the price of a non-subsidised 14.2 kilograms LPG cylinder in Goa will cost Rs 873.50. Earlier on 1 July, the price of the LPG cylinder was Rs 848.50 in Goa. In the last six months, the price of an LPG cylinder has gone up from Rs 808 to Rs 873.50.

The news of an increase in the price of LPG cylinders has put a damper on the celebrations of countless Goan households. More than 7 lakh consumers in Goa will be affected by the latest increase in the price. In Goa, there are about 4,40,000 HP cylinders users while 3 lakh families have got Bharat Gas and Indian Oil connections.

Already reeling from the economic challenges of the second wave of the pandemic and rising fuel prices, many households have been dealt a heavy blow with the latest increase in LPG cylinder prices.

Kalyani Petnekar, a homemaker, said that while the rice can afford the prices, the poor households have no options. “Commodity prices have gone up. But why do they go up so often? Those who have servants in the house are fine. But how can the wives of salaried workers pay for the house? When will gas become cheaper? Do we have to wait?”

The hike in the LPG comes at a time when petrol and diesel rates are at record highs across the country. Petrol prices have already touched the Rs 100 mark in Goa.
