MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council on Thursday has taken the charge of Sonsodo waste treatment plant as the seven-day time frame set by the court ended on Wednesday.

Speaking to GT, acting chairperson of civic body Tito Cardozo said that the council has started the process of taking over the treatment plant from the Fomento Company. Later on, chief officer Ajit Panchwadkar said that they have taken the charge of the plant. Fomento company also handed over the keys of the plant to the civic body.

"There are lots of machinery laying in the plant and hence we have first examined all those things," said Tito.

As informed by him the special five-member team of municipal engineers on Thursday inspected the waste treatment plant at Sonsodo. The team has also started the work of noting down all the equipment at the plant.  It may be recalled that in a letter written to MMC, Fomento Company drew attention to the fact that the plant is in running condition. The company had also shown the running of each of the machines at the plant to MMC representatives when they visited the plant on Wednesday. Fomento had also threatened the MMC to stop the plant from Thursday and not to receive any solid waste thereafter.

"We are looking into the matter with regard to the inventory of all assets, consisting of plant shed, plant and equipment in the processing plant, sanitary landfill, leachate receiving, JCB backhoe loader, fixtures, furniture, etc," said Tito.

When contacted, the chief officer Panchwadkar said that they have taken the charge of the waste treatment plant on Thursday. "The next course of action will be decided at the meeting to be held on Friday with the Chief Minister at Panaji," Tito informed.
