MMC, police request shop owners not to block traffic movement

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council and the traffic department have requested all the shop owners not to block the traffic movement by illegal parking and encroachments. They have warned to clear the way within eight days or face stern action.  Chief Officer of Margao Municipal Council Ajit Panchwadkar, Deputy Superintendent of South Goa traffic Probodh Shirvaikar, PI Suraj Samant, Sachin Narvekar, Public Works Department engineer Vivek Desai, RTO officer Sunil Korde and officials from mamlatdar office were also present at the time of inspection.  The above inspection was carried out on the backdrop of recently held meeting at South Goa District Collector by Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat. The meeting had resolved that within the 15 days the concerned authorities will inspect and identify all the areas with regard to pay parking proposals and making smooth traffic movement in Margao city. 

Officials inspected both the major market of Margao, the new market and the Gandhi market and also the surrounding area of both the markets.  Speaking to reporters CO Panchwadkar said, "This inspection was carried out on the backdrop of a recently held meeting by MLA Digambar Kamat. Accordingly, on Thursday, we have identified some of the areas which are creating major traffic obstruction in the city. We have also identified some of the areas pertaining to pay to park", he stated. 

Panchwadkar further said that they have found out that many shop owners are keeping their vehicles, blocking the traffic and also obstructing pedestrians. "We have given eight days time to remove all the items and make the ways clear. Also, warned the shop owners to remove their vehicles which are parked in the middle of the way. If they clear it then concerned authority will take action against them immediately," he warned.

Shirvaikar said that they have requested the shop owners not to block traffic by parking their vehicles all over the market. "We will act tough on the people and shop owners who are engaged in creating smooth traffic movement in the city," he added.  President of New Market Association, Vinod Shirodkar also agreed to corporate with the concerned authorities to make the city traffic congestion free.
