VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council has submitted to the directorate of municipal administration (DMA) a list of pre-monsoon works to be taken to tackle flooding and also to prevent water-borne diseases like malaria and dengue.

Addressing media persons on Monday, Mormugao municipal council chairperson Nandadeep Raut said that it was extremely important that pre-monsoon works were taken up on time and much ahead of monsoon to prevent any flood-like situations in the port town. He said that under the Fourteenth Finance Commission, the council had already prepared a list of works to be taken up in all the 25 wards. The estimates were also prepared and forwarded it to the office of the DMA for approval.

He said that the council will undertake all the pre-monsoon works soon and complete them before the onset of monsoon. He also appealed to all councilors to cooperate so that all pre-monsoon works are taken up and completed before the onset of monsoon.

Raut recalled that last year there were a couple of deaths due to suspected dengue and it was precise because of this the council had decided to undertake and complete all pre-monsoon works before the onset of monsoon. Raut said that he had already discussed the matter with Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and added that the council will soon convene a joint meeting of the councilors, health officers and local MLAs.

He further said that the Mormugao municipal council was prepared to use three fogging machines and added that the council will also make use of fogging machines owned by some of the councilors. The council will provide fuel for the machines when it is used by the council.

The chairperson said that all old tires, coconut shells, empty bottles and tins would be removed so to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes that transmit the dengue-causing virus. The awareness campaign will be started in all 25 wards informing people about the measures to be taken during monsoon to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes.
