Mormugoa may submerge underwater by 2100: NASA

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a dire warning for 12 coastal Indian cities that are already going through an unpredictable upheaval in weather patterns and environmental factors. The 12 Indian coastal cities are at a dangerous risk of rising sea levels that will submerge them by the end of the century.

Mormugao town is one such city along with 11 other Indian coastal cities including Mumbai, Mangalore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, among others, that are named in the IPCC report which are likely to experience the brunt of climate change and rising sea levels if the situation is not controlled. According to a climate change report, these cities could be nearly under three feet of water by the end of this century.

A new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was utility by NASA to analyse changes in sea levels throughout the world. IPCC has been providing global-scale assessments of Earth’s climate every five to seven years since 1988.

NASA used the data from satellites and ground equipment, as well as analysis and computer simulations, are used to make their sea-level forecasts.

“Coastal areas will see continued sea-level rise throughout the 21st century, contributing to more frequent and severe coastal flooding in low-lying areas and coastal erosion with extreme sea-level events that previously occurred once in 100 years could happen every year by the end of this century,” said the IPCC Working Group I report.
