MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco urged the State government to provide face masks and sanitizers at subsidized rates in wake of the Coronavirus scare.

In a special letter written to the Goa government on Thursday, Reginaldo requested that every health center both in government and private sector should have a dedicated wing (including quarantine facility) to tackle the coronavirus Covid-19.

"I would like to bring to your kind attention a subject of immediate health importance on the background of the latest news that two Goans after suspecting symptoms of Coronavirus (Covid-19) have been kept in quarantine at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim. On account of Covid-19 spreading its deadly fangs, the situation is alarming across the globe as it has already affected 1,26,427 people and killed 4636 till date. With each passing day, in India too the situation is getting grimmer as 73 people have already got infected with this virus," he stated.

Reginald also said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had already declared coronavirus outbreak as pandemic which means that the aforesaid disease is spreading in multiple countries around the globe at the same time.

"I would request your good self to take all the best available precautionary measures to combat the dangerous and fatal Covid-19," he urged.

Reginald suggested that the government in association with all its departments and all other stakeholders of the State be it village panchayats, municipal bodies, schools, colleges, NGOs, churches, temples, mosques, gurudwaras, etc should be pro-actively involved in the dissemination/propagation of Do's and Dont's of the Union Ministry of Health, Government of India’s to tackle the Coronavirus outbreak.

"For us, in Goa, it is very important to exercise the utmost caution while going to a crowded gathering and places such as markets, beaches. Let us please not forget that night clubs and parties are at the highest risk. We also need to be of utmost vigil against the spreading of the coronavirus as our Goa is in the midst of Shigmo an important State cultural festival and on March 14 at Nehru Stadium Fatorda, Goa is hosting ISL final between ATK (Kolkatta) and Chennaiyan FC (Chennai)," Reginald added.

The Curtorim MLA said that though all efforts are being put in place for quarantining passengers who have flown to Goa from virus affected international destinations including Italy, Goa is doing absolutely nothing to check on both road and rail travelers entering Goa.

"Shortage in supply of water in any part of the State will further worsen the woes on the front of sanitation and hygiene which in turn would weaken our resolve to face the challenges of Coronavirus," Reginald added.
