PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday assured members in the Legislative Assembly that 1722 contract workers working in Public Works Department (PWD) for last four years will be taken under the PWD Labour Supply Society.

Replying to the matter raised by Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat during zero hour, Sawant said that he, aware about the condition of these contract workers, working for more than 20 years in PWD and that they even do not get minimum wages. They get Rs 6000 per month while contractor gets Rs 9000. Even these workers do not get wages for six months. The contract workers also hail from Sakhali constituency represented by me and also from other constituencies.

The Chief Minister further said that there were as many as 1722 contract workers, who would be taken under society and their minimum wages would also be taken care of. Also cases of those who had worked for five years would also be considered, Sawant said adding that he will spell it out in detail in the State budget to be represented by him on Thursday, February 6.

Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat said that there was fear and anxiety in the mind of people working for more than five years in various departments like PWD, IT, etc under contractual basis.

''The workers under contract were given assurances by former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar in the House that the government will create a policy and regularise them as permanent employees. The same assurance was given by Dr Pramod Sawant also and PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar in terms of regularising the workers,'' Kamat said.
