MARGAO: Century-old well which was renovated by spending Rs 5.67 lakh a few months back is now found to be polluted with sewage at Old Market, Margao.

The above mention well was once used for drinking and other domestic purposes but now it is seen fully polluted and hence concerned citizen has express fear of losing the well permanently. It has been informed by local councilor Glen Andrade that the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has already issued notice to the building owner which is located near the well with regard to discharging sewage into the well.

"Long back we under the leadership of Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai had taken an initiative to renovate and beautify the century-old well, which was in very bad conditions. The works were carried out under the department of water resources", said Glen.

He also said that once upon a time the water from the same well was used for drinking and other domestic purposes. "It was clean water but in recent times the well is being polluted due to the released of sewage. The sewage built close to the well is discharging the sewage into the well", he added.

After taking note of the same, Margao Municipal Council besides MLA Vijai too had warned the owner of the building not to release the sewage into the well.

When contacted engineer of technical section of water resources department, Sydney Fernandes said that department had started the work of renovation of well in November 2018 and it was completed in 2019. "We had removed the 140 cubic meters of mud from the well", he informed. But at the moment this renovated well has been fully polluted.
