Renowned Goan artist Vamona Navelcar passed away at 8 am pm Monday, at the age of 91. He had been on life support.

Born in Pomburpa in 1930, Navelcar grew up in Portuguese ruled Goa and then went on to work in three continents. He studied art in Portugal in the 1950s, taught geometry in Mozambique, and then moved back to Portugal and, finally, to Goa in 1980.

In 1956 he received a scholarship from Portugal to study at Escola de Belas Artes, Lisbon graduating in 1962, completing a postgraduate course in 1963. 

He received the prestigious Gulbenkian fellowship twice and in 1973 won an award at the International Exhibition of Art in Monte Carlo for his drawing “Angosh Woman”.

He also features in the Dictionary of 20th Century Portuguese artists and the Encyclopaedia dos Artistas de Portugal.
