MARGAO: With Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant promising tap water supply to all households by March 31, taps in Sanvordem run dry till date.

Adding to the woes, is PWD's inability to supply water through the pipelines that were laid over a decade ago in the village of Ambeudok at Sanvordem and other places like Periudok, Guddemol, Devnamol, and Kuddegali.

Villagers here have to wait for the tankers to supply water to them that make their appearance merely twice a week.

Empty drums are kept in front of every house of Ambeudok and other places hoping for the tankers to come and quench their thirst. The JICA pipeline laid around eight years back also runs dry. The government is yet to connect it to the main pipeline of the Salaulim dam. When GT met few villagers from Ambeudok they fumed at the authorities. They alleged that there has been well-planned water management to benefit the two industries situated in the Sanvordem where even water from springs is diverted to benefit the the industrial units while taps in the entire village running dry.

Speaking to GT, a resident of Ambeudok, Raju Shirodkar said, "The water shortage is hampering the day to day life of locals. Water is being supplied to us by tankers just twice a week. However the authorities see to it that the taps in the two industries situated in the village never run dry. Many bore wells have been dug to cater to the needs of industries." "The water from the village springs has also been diverted to the industries but, nobody comes forward to dig bore wells for the benefit of the locals," he added.

Raju also alleged that for every election, politicians promise to solving the water problem and then vanish into thin air once elected. Ratika Naik, said that the government had laid down a water pipeline so that people get regular water supply. But, for the last 8 years, the pipeline is just lying there without a drop of water flowing from it. "With no proper water supply, people have to depend fully on the village wells for drinking water. In summer our plight is unimaginable as the wells run dry," Ratika said

She also said that every election is being fought on the assurance of giving water supply, but to date, nobody has fulfilled the assurance. When contacted Minister for Public Works Department and MLA of Sanvordem constituency Deepak Pauskar said that the issue will be resolved at earliest. “There are some pending works with regard to laying the water pipeline. Once, that is completed connections will be given and people will get the regular water supply. I am very much concerned with the issue and my priority is to resolve it," he assured.
