MARGAO: Margao Municipal councillors have sought help from Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai to run the Sonsodo garbage treatment plant. Fomento Resources is set to hand it over to the civic body after seven days.

On Monday, group of councillors met both the MLAs and sought help from them. The contract between Margao Municipal Council and Fomento Resources stands terminated. The court has however asked Fomento to run the waste treatment plant for another seven days. Margao Municipal Council wants to hand over the plant to Goa Waste Management Corporation. But the work of waste treatment is likely to be outsourced. In the meantime, some Fomento workers and machinery are likely to be retained till alternative arrangements are made.

Reacting to the issue, Vijai Sardesai said that he had long back alerted the government and the civic body with regard to finding out the solution if Fomento terminates the contract of treating waste at Sonsoddo. “We all need to come together and find out the solution, otherwise we will be forced to face a bad situation,” he stated.

Margao MLA and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat also assured the councillors to find out the solution. “MMC has planned to run the treatment plant for some days, till they find the solution,” he added. Meanwhile, it is informed that a delegation led by acting chairperson Tito Cardozo and chief officer Ajit Panchawadkar met chief minister Dr Pramod Sawant and sought the help. Power Minister Nilesh Cabral was also present.
