MARGAO: The additional district and session Judge Dvijple alias Dvija V Patkar on Wednesday acquitted 26-year-old Ram Barose from Bihar and his accomplice Vikas Kumar Sahu in connection with the sensational case of raping and committing murder of a fisherwoman Vijaya Pagi Kankonkar, 54 at Mastimoll-Canacona in January 2014.

Ram Barose was chargesheeted by the Crime branch police for raping the woman and committing her murder under section 376 and 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) while, Vikas was chargesheeted for receiving the stolen property ie a mobile phone belogning to the deceased.

The incident of raping and murdering aged woman in broad daylight had rocked the State and the Crime branch officers including senior officers were engaged in the investigation of the case.

Hundreds of residents including scores of fisherwomen, had shut down the municipal fish market at Chaudi-Canacona demanding immediate arrest of the alleged culprits.

The State government later handed over the case to the Crime branch for further investigations and they cracked the case and arrested the alleged accused after a week. goa
