Aishwarya, or Ash, Andrade, a Davorlim-based singer, songwriter and musician is definitely a talent to watch out for. Her debut album Discovery, which dropped on 22nd April 2022, continues to make a buzz as it explores the pop, hip-hop, rap and acoustic music genres. She considers herself a work-in-progress, creative person, who enjoys delving into varied streams, whether it has to do with work or just a hobby. She says, ‘I absolutely love dipping my feet into any new expression or innovation that comes out within the artistic community. Creativity has been my journey, my mentality and, until recently, my “discovery”.’

She further tells us what keeps her inspired, ‘I can’t put a name down, because there are so many! But when it comes to certain people, I’m inspired by their stubborn belief in themselves. My inspiration comes from such risk-takers because I thrive on their passion, their consistency and their character.’

One of the songs in Ash’s album is ‘Always a Fan’, a song that is written as an anthem for fans to express their gratitude and love towards the inspiring people in their lives. Speaking of the core of the song, she states, ‘It’s about this powerful cycle of how people can inspire us and have this beautiful connection. Following someone can lead to motivation or disappointment. And the song covers all that. It also teaches you that the person you look up to is a human being, who you should not only be inspired by, but who you should also empathise with.’

Barring the title track of the album, which took a while to write, the other songs of the album were written over the years and months before production. When it came to production, she proudly proclaims, ‘I took the long, durable and sensible approach to it. It was a challenge to give great musical support to the lyrics and composition, but thanks to my producer Brandon Mendes, my songs sound like they’re written by Ash Andrade, and that is the mark of a brilliant producer. Whether you listen to the intro of any song or skip to any part, you won’t need much time to recognise whether it’s me or someone else. There were so many corrections and revisions, but I have no regrets.’

Ash is a songwriter whose experiences inform her talent. She is certain that talent is necessary along with experience while creating a piece of music, as she articulates, ‘I do have the talent to write, but if it comes purely out of my ability to coin words, rhymes and melody, then I’ll only be creating soundwaves and not songs. If my songs come from my identity as a songwriter but not from my identity as a friend, daughter, lover, etc, then the message of my songs will revolve around my desire for recognition, my insecurity and the criticism I’m dealing with. And that is the reality of artists around us today. Their talent and the pressure to constantly be in and out of the studio to create the next big thing is destroying the soul of music and the message that should be found therein. Some of the biggest artists, I believe, are still yet to write their most honest pieces of art. I have a life that has much more to it than just being a talented songwriter. I want to live my life to the fullest and write my songs, and not write songs to get somewhere in life.’

Ash’s song ‘Waste the Sun’ speaks about it never being too late to work on one’s dreams. ‘So Much Time’ spells out that we need to overcome our fear of failure and just get going. ‘Fear of failure can paralyse you for years but the only way to come out of that is to keep trying and moving even though you feel nothing is happening or what you do is not making a difference. Your journey, no matter when you started it, or how long it’s taking, will always be valuable. Nobody is ever going to be sure about the end from the start, but you have to keep going. We get to attribute value to time, not the other way round,’ says Ash.

Her favourite musician Ed Sheeran, Ash believes, is a prodigy for marrying great music and illustrative lyrics.

Ash is currently working on writing and producing her music. Excitedly, she explains her next projects, ‘I have currently two nearly ready tracks. I’m planning to have a very natural approach to releasing my music since I’m more in control of production and the time I’ll be spending on a project. I always make a humongous deal out of promoting every song after a long spell and then it’s just crickets. I’m still working on a release strategy that fits my pace. But yes, more music is coming everyone’s way.’

In an attempt to inspire upcoming artists, she says, ‘Don’t wait for confidence to come or the fear to go away. Don’t wait for all the resources to come together to start. Back then, if I had only done the best I could with whatever was available to me, even if it was a stupid phone camera, I would have got somewhere. But that was my lesson, which you can turn into action. Step out and make it happen.’
