Miniature paintings that emerged out of a collaborative project between Meenakshi Sengupta (Kolkata) and Karine Rougier (Marseille) will be on display at the exhibition entitled ‘Ensemble!’ starting from April 8, 2022 at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts, Altinho, Panaji.
The project is supported by Institut Française and the Ville de Marseille. Meenakshi Sengupta and Karine Rougier have both worked with Shifting Frames, an art gallery involved in collaborative projects between France and India.
They started their journey in 2019 at Santiniketan as part of a residency project supported by Institut Française and the Ville de Marseille, which continued remotely over the past two years culminating in Goa with this special viewing and presentation.
Themes and subject
Meenakshi Sengupta who lives in Kolkata works on appropriating a variety of familiar motifs from both Indian and Western pictorial tradition. She tries to re-contextualize them in the light of contemporary concerns. While Karine Rougier, Marseille-based artist takes her inspiration from multiple universes. She has developed a practice of oil painting on wood and drawing. She gives a new meaning to the images and stories she finds around her. She then tries to reinterpretation these and create a mystical world.
Through the collaborative artworks one will gain insights into the connections forged between the artists, their practices and cultural backgrounds. It will dive into the narratives and their representations of the feminine while exploring questions of individuality of the artists and ownership of the co-created artworks.
