Working with young students can be among the most rewarding of experiences. Their enthusiasm, imagination and eagerness to share ideas provide a sense of immediate accomplishment.

The project 'Stories from Here and Beyond', created by Rui Rochinha Andrade (based in Portugal) and Nalini Elvino de Sousa, from Goa, is a testament to what can be achieved when young minds come together to tell stories that matter.

This weekend, Nalini along with her team will be talking to young minds about the various issues addressing important global concerns such as water pollution and gender equality.

“With the support of our associations, Avoar and Communicare Trust, we engage with students from Portugal, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Goa to create a series of books under the title 'Stories from Here and Beyond'. We are also addressing important global issues such as water pollution and gender equality,” says Nalini.

The latest book is currently in progress in Cape Verde, in collaboration with Instituto Camoes, under the guidance of Marina Nedio, Goa at St Andrews High School (ICSE) and Portugal in Portalegre and Mem Martins.

The theme for this third edition is climate change—an urgent topic that affects all, and one that young people are eager to understand and address through storytelling. The event is free of cost and is aimed at both – adults and children.

“I will be sharing our journey from the inception of our first book to where we are today. In addition to discussing the creative process behind these books, I will also showcase the animated films we have developed as part of the project. These short films bring our stories to life, making the themes even more engaging for children,” says Nalini.

Beyond just presenting their work, this session will be highly interactive as Nalini will engage with the young audience and their parents to discuss ways in which these ideas can be spearheaded and taken forward.

Insights on creating more spaces for children to share their voices, encouraging cross-cultural storytelling that connects communities across borders will be shared.

In a world that often closes its doors to entire communities, it is more important than ever to find ways of breaking walls and bringing people together. Stories have the power to build bridges, foster empathy and inspire action.

By encouraging young minds to explore and share their perspectives, the project aims to cultivate a new generation of storytellers who are aware, engaged, and ready to make a difference.

The event will take place at That Book Store, a beautifully curated space in Porvorim, filled with books for every taste. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, storyteller or simply someone who believes in the power of stories, feel free to join the session.
