What if you were told there was a place where music, ambience and food came together to arouse all your senses at once?

Art escape Experience, The Live Music Project (TLMP) and Idea Boutique will do exactly that with their Raga-Rasa Monsoon Evening Edition for two days – July 13 and July 14 – at TIEN in Vagator (North Goa) and Silva Heritage in Benaulim (South Goa).

At this musical feast, you will be shrouded in music as its strains hang about you like a shadow. It’ll take you on a sensory journey as you explore and experience Raga (pitches defining Indian melodies) and its Rasa (moods).

MUSIC MANSION: Silva Heritage in Benaulim (South Goa), one of the venues of Raga-Rasa, will be lapped in Sitar strains on July 14.

The melodious Raga-Rasa evenings, which are split into two parts, will begin at 5 pm and wrap up by 10 pm, where Pune-based Sitar player Varun Nimbolkar will enthral the audience with his performance. He has been trained under international Sitar maestro Ustad Usman Khan of Dharwad Gharana lineage.

Nimbolkar, who is also a songwriter-composer, is a versatile musician and dabbles in a blend of genres like Blues rock, soft rock, drum and bass and folk rock with Indian melodies. His buffet of music, consisting of his unique fusion and story-based compositions, will be a treat for the ears.

Raga-Rasa UNRAVELLED

Here, the concepts of Indian classical music – Raga and Rasa – will be demystified in an interactive way. This approach encourages learning about traditional classical music even as it fosters discussions on its cultural relevance today.

It will try to dig deep to uncover the meaning of Raga by trying to answer questions like what is the way to learn it? What are the ingredients to improvise it? Do rules define the Raga?  Does knowing the rules makes one a Raga musician? The bid to learn the real definition of Raga would begin by first understanding the musical instrument first – the Sitar and its 20 strings.

VENUE IN NORTH: TIEN in Vagator will come alive with Raga-Rasa music on July 13.

Rasa would be understood by experiencing it. This would be done by playing 2-3 Ragas (melodies with different pitches) laced with different Rasas (moods) to establish how these Ragas change the ambience and effect the mood of listeners.

After an hour’s break, the second session will have ambient music on electric Sitar with some harmony and rhythm backtracks or loops. This would also show how Ragas can be ingredients for composing music and expressing stories. The evenings promise to lift the veil over Ragas and Rasas or just offer the fodder of music to your frayed soul.
