Travel and tourism can have profound effects. Not just for the one setting foot on a new destination, but for those who call the place home, too.
Tourism impacts not just an area, but also the local community, as well, and while there are downsides to it, sometimes there are also upsides. The latter is especially thanks to the many responsible tourists who, through mindful actions, leave a place transformed, and the locals, particularly the women of the community, strengthened.
If you’re in Goa on the weekend that coincides with Women’s Day, or maybe planning a visit in the coming days, go out there and support Goa’s women entrepreneurs and their businesses. If you find it challenging to identify them, here’s a list to assist you.
EMPOWERING ESCAPES
After quitting their corporate careers, and starting their first venture in Raigad, Sneha Mahashabde and Anuja Phadke made their way to Goa in search of a more peaceful, laid back lifestyle.
The duo restored a dilapidated colonial house in Guirim and transformed it into Caju Grove, a cosy homestay.
“Our homestay, started two years back, with the help of amazing people who we met in Goa. It has, over time, evolved into a community space. We have a co-working space, a homemade food cafe and a Nook bar,” Anuja highlights.
Beyond offering a relaxing stay to those visiting Goa, Caju Grove also hosts workshops, including regional food pop-ups and a variety of events, making it a fun-filled spot for visitors.

STYLED STRONG
Sneha Rodrigues started Modish Boutique in Caranzalem four years ago as a small home-based business, initially focusing only on jewellery. The warm response she received encouraged her to dream bigger, ultimately motivating her to take the leap, and launch her own store that today sells clothing, jewellery and other fashion accessories.
As a woman entrepreneur in Goa, Sneha feels that building the brand has been about more than just curating looks – it’s about helping women express themselves with confidence.
“Every customer who shops with us isn’t just taking home a piece of fashion; they’re supporting a community of women-led businesses that celebrate creativity and individuality,” she shares proudly.

CULINARY QUEENS
Another charming corner that’s all women-led is the Goldspot Canteen. Founded by two friends, Iram Khan and Sameera Khan, the restaurant serves hearty thalis, crispy fried fish and biryani, that’s available on bulk order, all made by Saira Khan.
At the age of 55, having got the opportunity to pursue something she had always loved doing as a kid, Saira took the chance of working at the space that’s co-owned by her daughter.
“It’s like a dream come true,” says Saira, who can often be found in the kitchen, working some magic to serve a delicious dish to those visiting the canteen.
