Goa Forward Party Siolim MLA Vinod Paliencar on Friday, January 21, resigned from the party and the Assembly ahead of the next month's Goa Assembly elections

Paliencar, representing Siolim seat, tendered his resignation to the office of the Speaker during the day.

Paliencar said he resigned as his supporters want him to fight the polls, as an Independent candidate from Siolim.

Earlier, Paliencar had said he wants to contest the elections. However, GFP gave the seat to Congress as part of the seat-sharing pact between the two parties.

On Thursday, GFP Chief Vijai Sardesai applogised to Paliencar for failing him to ensure a party ticket in Siolim on account of alliance compulsion. "I apologise to Palincar as out alliance with Congress has cost him candidature. If it were in my hands, I would surely have inducted him in the alliance but I am helpless," he said,

Congress has fielded Parra Sarpanch Delilah Lobo from Siolim who has already begun her campaign with the support of her influential husband Michael Lobo.

Paliencar has became the second GFP legislator after Jayesh Salgaonkar to resigne ahead of the polls, reducing the strength of the Vijai Sardesai-led party in the 40-member House to one.

In the 2017 Assembly polls, Congress had won 17 seats in the tiny coastal state to emerge as the single largest party. However, the BJP, which was in second place in terms of seats, quickly stitched an alliance with smaller parties and Independent MLAs to form its government in Goa.

The election for the 40 seats will take place on February 14, and the ballots will be counted on March 10.
