NGT clears demolition of Curlies at Anjuna

The National Green Tribunal has upheld the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) order directing the demolition of Curlies beach shack and restaurant at Anjuna. NGT pointed out that several changes and additions have been made to the original structure.

"The fact remains that all constructions are found to be occupied by the appellant, even construction in survey number 42/10 is not pre-1991. Fresh construction has been raised in replacement of original one for commercial purposes without requisite permission in the No Development Zone,” states the NGT order.

Curlies Co-owner Linet Nunes had filed a petition before the NGT challenging the GCZMA order.

The restaurant was in the news after Haryana BJP leader Sonali Phogat was allegedly forcefully made to consume drinks spiked with narcotic drugs at the restaurant by her associate who is the prime accused.

Churchill Alemao disqualified as prez of GFA for crossing 70 yrs of age

The High Court on Thursday ruled that Churchill Alemao will cease to be the president of Goa Football Association (GFA) as he is over 70 years of age. The court order came in view of the fact that GFA had adopted the National Sports Code which debars anyone from holding office beyond the age of 70 years. Churchill had turned 70 on May 16, 2019. The court, however, observed that decisions taken during Alemao’s tenure will hold good and shall not be called into question. The court also quashed the amendments made by GFA in its EGM on February 3, 2019, primarily allowing those above the age of 70 to continue in office.

With the aim of improving Ease Of Doing Business (EoDB), the Town and Country Planning Department has empaneled notary architects and notary engineers who will be eligible to issue a third party or Self Technical Clearance, Development permission and completion order for projects.

Uprooted tree falls on biker injuring him grievously

A biker was grievously injured after a huge jungle tree uprooted and fell on him at Borim near Top Cola junction on Thursday early morning.

Samadhan Yamgar (29), resident of Dhavalim-Ponda, was travelling to work at the Verna Industrial Estate at the time of the incident. He sustained serious injuries.

The uprooted tree caused a traffic jam for some time. The injured biker was immediately shifted to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Mapusa police nab man for stealing mobiles, cash

Mapusa police nabbed a thief for stealing three smartphones and cash by forcefully opening dickies of three scooters recently in Aldona. Police managed to recover the stolen goods from the man.

As per the information given by the Mapusa Police Inspector Paresh Naik, Mapusa police arrested Ansar Narangi (32) resident of housing board-Margao for allegedly stealing three smartphones and cash worth Rs 2000 by forcefully opening the dickies of the three parked scooters in Aldona.

Law & order, administration have collapsed: MP

South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Thursday said that the law and order situation and administration in Goa have collapsed. The image of Goa is taking a beating due to the rise in crimes and illicit activities, the MP stated.

In a press conference held in MargaoSardinha suggested that the Chief Minister should act to save the situation from going out of hand.

Speaking on the sand extraction incident, the MP said that in the past he had suggested earmarking certain sites for legal sand extraction in a traditional method.

GSL launches vessel for carrying LPG cylinders

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) launched the indigenous LPG Cylinder Carrier Vessel for the Union Territory of Lakshadweep on Thursday at the hands of Cynthia Conceicao, a seniormost woman employee of GSL, in the presence of Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman and Managing Director, Capt Jagmohan, Director (CPP&BD), customer’s representatives and senior officials from GSL.

A press note issued by GSL stated that the vessel has been developed and designed by GSL as a Twin Screw Vessel for carrying 2000 LPG cylinders from the mainland to various islands of Lakshadweep. This is one of its kind vessel equipped with the most modern and technologically advanced machinery and control systems.

Coast Guard undertakes cleanliness drive on Velsao beach

Puneet Sagar Abhiyan, Coastal Cleanship event was conducted by the Indian Coast Guard, District 11, through their personnel from ICGS VAIBHAV at Velsao Beach in Co-ordination with VP Velsao, Pale & Issorcim recently.

It is learnt that teachers and students from Infant Jesus Academy, members of NGO Goencho Ekvott and villagers of Velsao, Pale, Issorcim, Cansaulim and nearby villages lent a helping hand to pick up the waste washed ashore on a fairly clean Velsao beach.

Varca panchayat demonstrates drone to spray pesticides

Varca panchayat held a demonstration of an electronic drone which has been developed to spray pesticides on crops.

Fr George Quadros from Don Bosco-Fatorda opined that this drone will come in handy for farmers and will also aid in saving money and time.

On Thursday morning, the panchayat members witnessed the demonstration of the drone.

Fr Quadros said the drone will reduce labour costs and at the same time will reduce the quantum of fertilizers to 50 per cent.

Railway bridge in Vasco to be rebuilt, sanction accorded

The rebuilding of the railway bridge near Hotel Tanya in Vasco has been sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Railways. The existing height of the railway tunnel which is 3.2 meters from the road will be elevated to 4 meters to ease the movement of heavy as well as emergency vehicles.

BJP's Vasco MLA Krishna (daji) Salkar posted the information on social media.

In the past people from Mangor, Belabai and Sasmollem areas faced difficulty in getting emergency vehicles such as fire tenders and ambulances to Mangor hill due to the height of the tunnel.
