Bail rejected in cheating case

South Goa Additional Sessions Judge Vincent D'Silva rejected the anti-arrest bail application of Bangalore-based Binish Thomas, who is accused of cheating Piedade Fernandes of Fatorda to the tune of Rs 48 lakh by pretending to get his daughter admitted to a medical college in Mangalore.

Judge D'Silva observed the crime is of serious nature and there was a need to keep the accused in custody and find out whether has cheated more pople in this manner.

Man dies after coming under train

A 40-year-old fireman named Ratan Parab, resident of Kasarvornem village in Pernem taluka, working in the Fire and Emergency Services, was found dead on railway track in Tiracol area.

The Konkan Railway police said they received a call from the Pernem railway station's station master stating that the Porbandar to Kochuvelli express train ran over a man at 10.12 pm on Friday night.

The body of the person was identified and was sent for preservation. The mortal remains will be handed over to the family of the deceased on Sunday after completion of the standard procedure, police said.

Ocean sailing expedition on INSV Tarini to Mauritius

Cmde Sanjay Panda Commanding Officer, INS Mandovi, flagged off a sailing expedition from Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius, on Saturday.

The expedition is being undertaken by a crew of six (including three women officers) onboard INSV Tarini.

Covering a distance of almost 2500 nm (approx 4500 km) one way, the crew, over a period of 20-21 days is expected to face extreme weather and rough sea conditions of the monsoon.

In addition to sailing in these conditions, the crew will also be undertaking boat upkeep, machinery routines and preparing their meals. The passage would be nonstop once they leave the Indian shores.

The Indian Navy has six ocean-going Indian Naval Sailing Vessels (INSVs) viz Mhadei, Tarini, Bulbul, Hariyal, Kadalpura and Neelkanth in her inventory.

These yachts regularly undertake expeditionary sailing with a small crew of naval personnel. The crew for the sea sorties are selected from volunteers with adequate sea sailing experience.

The famous 'Handi Khuris' feast was celebrated with great religious fervour at Maina-Curtorim. This cross is popular among the Christian community of South Goa. Hundreds of devotees today visited and prayed before this cross expecting a positive changes in their lives.

New traffic signal stops working within 48 hrs at Maxem

Newly installed traffic signal stopped functioning within 48 hours at Maxem-Canacona (NH66). Locals have expressed concern about vehicular accidents which might happen due to the non functional signal whose main purpose was to regulate the fast movement of traffic on this part of the highway.

Vasco fish vendors' ultimatum on illegal sale of fish

Old Cross Fishing Canoe Owners Cooperative Society President Custodio D'Souza has given eight days ultimatum to stop the illegal sale of fish outside the new fish market shed in Vasco.

He said if there is no action, then the vendors from the temporary fish market shed will sit outside Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar's office and start selling fish.

Only 8% Goans employed at Mopa airport, claims GFP

Goa Forward Party supremo Vijai Sardesai claims that only 5198 people have been given employment at the Mopa international airport, out of which only 443 are Goans which works out to 8 per cent. Out of this 8 per cent, 5 per cent employed are from Pernem taluka, he said.

The leader asked the BJP to answer as to whose growth Mopa airport was catering to. GFP had demanded 80 per cent jobs to Goans at Mopa, but just 8 per cent employment has been given, he ridiculed.

Two-wheeler rider sustains injuries to head

A two-wheeler rider sustained head injuries in an accident on the national highway opposite Blueberry Hill hall in Verna. Onlookers claim that the bike rider and a car were both moving from the airport towards Verna at the time of the accident.

At the time of overtaking, it is believed that the rider hit the car and lost control. The car fell into a trench next to the highway. The rider was shifted to a hospital immediately, said an onlooker.

South Goa advocates extend support to North counterparts

South Goa Advocates Association (SGAA) has extended support to Mapusa Advocates forum on the grievances raised by the latter about the functioning of the Office of the Sub-Registrar Mapusa.

SGAA called for complete transparency and accountability in the functioning of all sub-registrar offices in the state and impressed on zero tolerance for corruption.

Earlier, the association had raised the issue of digitisation of all records/deeds which are registered in the sub-registrar offices.

The association has requested the government to expedite their request for online viewing of all registered documents as a step towards curbing malpractices and land scams in the State.

Car hits lamp post

A speeding Maruti Dezire car rammed into a street lamp at Gandhinagar, Mangor Hill, Vasco, in the wee hours of Saturday. The accident took place on the four-lane highway (NH17B). It is not known whether the car driver sustained any injuries or in which direction the vehicle was proceeding.

One injured as truck goes off road

A truck driver, Rehmad Ansari, was injured in this accident that took place on Friday night on the Bicholim-Sankhali road. The driver was stuck inside the cabin and had to be rescued.
