Seventy six-year-old Fidelis Mariano, of Ambelim, was found murdered at his residence in the wee hours of Sunday. His ‘mentally ill’ daughter, Marianne Cardozo, 50, has been arrested and lodged at the Institute of Psychiatry & Human Behaviour, Bambolim, in connection with the case, said the police.

Based on a complaint, the Cuncolim police have registered a case against the woman under Section 302 of IPC.

A wooden stick, allegedly used by Marianne to murder her father, has been recovered by the police. The police said that the accused allegedly killed her father by hitting him on his head with a stick, somewhere between 4 am and 6 am on Sunday.

After attending midnight mass on Saturday night, Mariano returned home, while his wife went to her sister’s place.

The police added that Marianne was a divorcee and that the motive for the crime is yet to be ascertained.

Marianne got married in 1997. After her divorce in 2000, she had been residing with her father. According to police, her mental condition had deteriorated during the past week and she had also stopped taking the medication, prescribed by the doctor.
