VASCO: Former Minister Rajendra Arlekar on Wednesday claimed that nearly 10,000 people from all walks of life and all communities exclusively from Mormugao taluka will participate in the rally in support of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Vasco on Sunday, February 2. Addressing a press conference at Vasco, Arlekar said that the rally would be non-political and will be organised under the banner of the Mormugao supports CAA - Nation First so as to create awareness on CAA. Many institutions and organisations supporting the CAA will participate in the rally starting at 3 pm. Arlekar said that the rally will be a show of strength and support to the CAA. The rally will start from Kadamba bus stand and culminate into a public meeting at the Mormugao municipal building. He alleged that lot of wrong information and messages were being spread amongst the people regarding the CAA and therefore through the rally we will try to bring maximum awareness among the people on the CAA with all necessary information and allay their apprehensions. Arlekar opined that people should know the facts and advantages of the CAA and how important it was for the nation. The support for the rally is growing and we expect minimum 10,000 crowd on Sunday. He said that the CAA was important because many minorities in the neighbouring countries had been harassed and persecuted and they had taken refugee in India. They are currently Stateless and the CAA will grant Indian citizenship to these people. This had nothing to do with any Indian citizens as it will not take away anybody's citizenship but will grant citizenship to minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanisthan. The former Minister further denied that the CAA was violation of preamble of the Constitution of India and demanded that the protestors should make it public which clause of the preamble of the Constitution had affected them and why were they opposing it. He argued that when a particular law affects a person, he/she can either support ir or oppose it but when a law is not affecting anyone at all what was the reason to oppose it? he asked. He said that the people opposing the CAA had no answers while those supporting the CAA had all the information to justify their stand, Arlekar said.
