Two Bulgarians held for trying to rig BoI ATM

Panaji: The Mapusa police arrested two Bulgarians on Sunday for trying to steal customer data by attaching a skimmer to an ATM of the Bank of India (BoI) in Mapusa. According to a FIR filed at the police station, the two accused Ivo Petrov Metcheno (47) and Milen Ivanov Davaranski, (45) were arrested, while attaching a skimmer to an ATM operated by Bank of India. A skimmer is a gadget attached to an ATM card slot, which gleans private user information, once a card is slipped into the slot. The stolen information, which includes card details, is then used to withdraw money remotely. The cops had kept a watch on the ATM machine after the chief manager of the Milind Purohit complained that a skimming device was connected to the Bank of India ATM machine and valuable data of customers, who visited the ATM counter for their transactions, was stolen. The bank authorities were earlier alerted when the staff who gone to load cash in the machine on 2 January found it difficult to do their job and suspected something fishy there. The Mapusa police were then informed and the CCTV footage revealed that two foreigners were behind the crime and had come by bike at the scene of offence. The vehicle was registered in the name of a woman from Porta Vaddo in Siolim but she was presently residing in Arpora and running a supermarket there. The police then paid a visit to the woman who her rented the bike and showed her the photos of the accused and she did confirm that the duo had taken her vehicle on rent. The cops then patiently waited and the accused did turn up at the scene of offence at around 10.30 pm on Saturday to collect the skimming device. While Ivo was nabbed by the cops on the spot, Milen managed to give the cops a slip and headed straight for the airport but was caught by the Dabolim airport police while trying to flee the country. One lap top, 6 mobiles, card reader external hard disk and two skimmers were recovered from them and the duo have been booked under section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code, and remanded to 7 days. The Mapusa police team comprised of PI Tushar Lotlikar, PSI Anil Polekar, Irshad Watangee, Franky Vaz, Rajesh Kandolkar, Laxmikant Naik, Vijay Naik, Abhishek Kasar and Sarvesh Mandrekar The Dabolim police team comprising of PSI Pritesh Govekar, Aiyaz Shaikh, Sushma Volvoikar, Amit Bandekar noticed the accused Milen Davranski at the departure terminal and nabbed him after verifying details . He was later detained at Dabolim Airport police station before being handed over to the Mapusa police for further investigation after completion of necessary formalities .
