Councillor Jaya Sawant was elected as the new Deputy chairperson of the Ponda Municipal Council on Thursday, November 18.
While MGP-Goa Forward Party-backed Jaya Sawant secured 9 votes, BJP's Archana Naik Dangi got 6 votes. 15 corporators were present for this election.
Veterendra Dhavlikar, Deputy Mayor of Ponda Corporation resigned from the post, leaving the seat vacant. Jaya Sawant and Archana Naik Dangi filed in their nomination papers for the post resulting in which the Mago Goa Forward recieved 9 votes and BJP 6 votes, thus resulting a win over BJP.
Speaking after getting elected, Sawant said that she will carry out the development work with the support of everyone and credited Ketan Bhatikar for her victory.
Councillor Venkatesh Naik said that all the 15 councillors were united for the development of Ponda even though the election was only for the post of deputy mayor.
The election was called in following the resgination of following the resignation of Veerendra Dhavlikar after a no-trust motion was moved against Dhavlikar by all 15 councillors on October 11.
