Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) officials on Wednesday, January 5, took out a drive to clear encroachment by fruit vendors in Vasco.

Chief Officer Jayant Tari and Mayor Damodar Kaskar along with Traffic Police Inspector Sudesh Narvekar and municipal engineer patroled the market in Vasco that is overrun by vegetable markets and fish markets.

The vendors were seen sitting on the street wherever they can find their business which causes great inconvenience to traffic as well as pedestrians.

The traders had encroached on the road from Salgaocar House to TB Cunha Circle in Vasco and kept their fruit baskets outside the allotted space.

Municipal employees have been ordered to confiscate all the goods in case of further encroachment.

All traders have been assured of another space along the road. So that the vendors will not bother the drivers as well as the pedestrians. The chief officer has ordered vendors to comply with the orders.

However, vendors were irked after their tarpaulin and wooden sheets used to cover their carts were also confiscated.

MMC officials rushed to the area after complaints of frequent congestion in the area. Following these complaints, they patrolled the market area and instructed all traders to remove the encroachment. The fishmongers were also evicted.
