Finance department seeks info of defaulting farmers

Mumbai: As soon as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a waiver of farm loans up to Rs one lakh in a cabinet meeting in Lucknow, the Maharashtra government has also started studying the model, as announced in the assembly recently. The finance department of the State government is compiling information of farmers who are defaulters. It is an exercise to study the Uttar Pradesh farmers’ loan waiver model. After compilation, the state will study the models of other states too. According to the finance department of the State, 1,36,97,000 crore farmers are defaulters. The finance department has asked the information about farmers from 34 districts. The information has been sought through the district banks. The State government is collecting the information of defaulter farmers and the amount of the loan that has not been paid, the reason behind why the loan was taken, crop pattern and irrigation system in that particular area. The government is also collecting data from the district bank whether the farmers were benefited by the loan from the bank or not. After Uttar Pradesh government announced a loan waiver up to Rs one lakh to the farmers in UP, the pressure on Maharashtra government has also increased. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced in the assembly that the government will study the UP pattern of farm loan waiver.  “After studying the pattern, the government will check the feasibility of the pattern in the state,” said an official from the finance department. “Also, the government has to reduce spending on infrastructural projects if the loan waiver is given to the farmers,” he further added. Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has criticised the State government. As monsoon settles, the farmers will get the loan for next year and they will forget the demand,” said Vikhe Patil.
