MATI’S BEGINNINGS
Founded with the vision of creating a community where artists, makers and dreamers who cherish living in harmony with nature can thrive, Mati Earth Studio came into existence, thanks to Aparna Sukhija, a ceramic artist who calls Goa home for over a decade, and Gloriana Riggioni, a sculptor and art teacher from Costa Rica.
With their shared passion, the duo set out to create a space where creativity flows through natural materials and traditional techniques, a space that fosters learning, collaboration, and a deep connection to the planet.
“What initially attracted us to pottery was a profound connection to the material; it feels alive and deeply immersive,” shares Aparna.
"We draw inspiration from the forms and processes found in nature, and we wanted to extend this connection to every area of our lives—where we live, how we nourish ourselves, and how we handle our waste, among other aspects,” she adds.
GROUNDED AS THE EARTH
Their deep-rooted connection with the earth is reflected in the name ‘Mati’, which means ‘earth’ in several Indian languages.
“It reflects our mission to foster a community that values sustainable living and artistic expression, reminding us of our responsibility to care for the world we inhabit,” Aparna says.
Committed to sustainability, not just through their art, but by inspiring the community to adopt eco-friendly practices, at Mati Earth Studio, managing waste and compost is done responsibly.
Besides, they reuse water from pottery processes for plants and a permaculture garden, which has around 20 trees and native plants, which helps restore soil health, and the studio stays naturally cool with its mud walls and floors.
Designed to be a serene oasis, their studio in Mandrem blends natural elements with artistic flair. The open layout at Mati encourages collaboration and creativity, featuring sustainable materials such as mud, cow dung and bamboo.
Abundant natural light floods the space, inspiring work, and enhancing the learning experience.
STUDIO AND WORKSHOPS
Mati Earth Studio, in Mandrem, offers a variety of workshops, from learning skills such as wheel throwing and hand-building to exploring techniques from primitive methods to contemporary practices.
Additionally, they also provide an introduction to cyanotype printing, and conduct pop-up workshops.
“Our workshops are designed to enable everyone to express their creativity and develop a deeper appreciation for the craft. They are available as 2-hour taster sessions for beginners, immersive mid- and long-term courses, or flexible bundles that allow participants to fit regular sessions into their schedules,” explains Aparna.
Mati Earth Studio offers a variety of workshops, from learning skills such as wheel throwing and hand-building to exploring techniques from primitive methods to contemporary practices.
Throughout the year, they host specialised programs on natural building, permaculture, advanced human anatomy sculpture, metalwork, glazing, and primitive firing techniques.
They also offer tailor-made activities for retreat groups, families and corporate teams.

A typical day at the studio includes two sessions, which is from 11 am - 1 pm and 3 pm - 5 pm. All bookings need to be made in advance, via their website or WhatsApp. The studio remains closed on Tuesdays.
