From the quiet lanes of Varbhat, Ponda, comes a story of sheer transformation and unshakable determination. It's the journey of Vidhyesh Kavlekar, once a shy, underweight teen, now among Goa's finest bodybuilders.

At 34, Vidhyesh’s story isn’t just about building muscle. It’s about building character, commitment, and a life powered by purpose.

Fifteen years ago, Vidhyesh weighed just 40 kg. “I was extremely skinny, even during school and higher secondary,” he recalls. That fragile frame and a desire to feel stronger sparked his first steps into the gym.

What began as a personal goal soon evolved into something far more serious, and thus started his journey into competitive bodybuilding.

“I never imagined I’d reach this far,” he admits. But when a trainer noticed his potential and nudged him to take one step further, Vidhyesh took the plunge. Years of hard work followed, guided by discipline, smart training, and a fierce inner drive.

Today, his achievements speak volumes. A seven-time Mr Goa titleholder, Vidhyesh made a mark at the Sheru Classic 2019 and placed in the top six at Amateur Olympia 2023.

Most recently, he clinched 5th place at the 2025 Asian Bodybuilding Championship in the Men’s Classic Physique category held in Ajman, UAE from June 14 to 18. "Classic Physique is all about symmetry, aesthetics, and conditioning. It’s not just about bulking up and balance,” he explains.

Behind the medals is a method. Vidhyesh’s training routine combines weight training, cardio, and flexibility exercises. His diet is clean and consistent, but not rigid. “I eat smart, basically clean food most of the time, and treat myself once in a while. Supplements are there, but I use them wisely, and always under guidance.”

One of his key mentors is Irshan Bijani, who, also as a coach, helped him refine his nutrition and physique for elite competition. But Vidhyesh also credits his long-time friend, versatile Goan artist Sahil Naik, for being a constant support. “Sahil and I have been friends for long. He may not be from the fitness world, but he always encouraged me when I doubted myself.”

Beyond the body, Vidhyesh believes the mind plays the biggest role. “You can’t build a champion’s body without a focused mind,” he says. This mindset helped him juggle a full-time job. He works as a sergeant at the Goa Legislative Assembly while still preparing for international events.

Vidhyesh is part of Godspeed Gym in Ponda, where he helps others start small and stay consistent. His message to young fitness enthusiasts is clear. "Please walk, move, lift, eat smart, avoid extremes, build habits, and no shortcuts.”

Despite his success, financial hurdles persist. “Bodybuilding is expensive as one has to eat good food, take supplements, and there are expenses towards coaching and travel. Without sponsors, most of us fund everything ourselves,” he says. For his UAE trip, he saved for nearly a year, with some help from friends and local supporters.

Yet, Vidhyesh is undeterred. His goal now? To represent India at the Mr World competition, but with less time at his disposal, it may not happen in 2025.

“If my story motivates even one person to lead a healthier life, that’s my biggest win,” he avers. In a world of overnight fame and shortcuts, Vidhyesh Kavlekar is a rare example of strength forged in silence, not just of the body, but of will.
