The video sheds light on the origins of the Goa Carnival as we know it today. The Carnival in Goa has evolved over the years, dating back to the 18th century. However, it was in the 1960s that the current version of the Goa Carnival, took shape, featuring elaborate parades, fun costumes, and massive floats.

THE REVIVAL BY KING MOMO

When we talk about the Goa Carnival, a person who cannot be forgotten is Timoteo Fernandes -- a key figure in reviving and promoting the Goan Carnival worldwide. He served as the first King Momo in this Goan festival.

King Momo is at the heart of the Carnival celebrations. The festivities begin on Fat Saturday (locally known as Sabado Gordo) with the majestic entry of King Momo, portrayed by a local dressed in royal attire. It is only when the King declares, “Eat, drink, and make merry” that the Carnival festivities officially begin.
