When you think of Goa, especially Goan cuisine, a meal that instantly comes to mind before any other is the classic Goan fish thali—truly, the heart and soul of this beautiful coastal paradise.

Fish curry and rice are staples in every Goan household. The minute the clock strikes lunchtime, the aroma of coconut-based curry, and tantalising scent of fried fish fills the air. In this video, we’re taking you to one of Goa’s most iconic restaurants—none other than Café Ritz Restaurant and Bar to try its famous fish thali.

The Ritz Legacy

Café Ritz is located in Goa's capital city, Panjim, where all the culinary magic unfolds. While in Goa, you may have come across the fancy outlets of the popular multi-cuisine restaurant, Ritz Classic, but this one is a bit more special and shouldn't be mistaken for those.

This small and quaint hotel is where the franchise Ritz Classic was born—this is where the dream began. Since its inception in the 1970s, Cafe Ritz has been renowned for serving authentic fish thali. So, we decided to give it a try, and introduce you to this hidden gem in Goa.

OLD IS GOLD: Cafe Ritz in Panjim has been serving delicious Goan meals since the 1970s.

Authentic Goan Flavours

We decided to go for their best-selling Bangda (Mackerel) fish thali, priced at ₹250. In addition to the three essentials—rice, fish curry, and fried fish—the thali came with a bunch of side dishes, including kismoor, vegetable gravy, crab xacuti, tisrreachem (clams) sukhem, and kokum kadi.

The place has a diverse selection of fish and seafood to choose from. Along with a variety of fish thalis, it also serves other Goan delicacies like chicken xacuti and a local favourite, cafreal.

The distinct flavours of Goan cuisine came to life with every bite of rice mixed with fish curry. The curry tasted just like the one made at Goan homes, full of love and Goan heritage. This is exactly why fish curry and rice are comfort foods for many locals.

It was a well-balanced platter showcasing the region's culinary delights. So, if you want to experience something very local in Goa that feels like home-cooked food, make sure to include Café Ritz on your list of places to visit in the State.

PERFECT MEAL: A Goan fish thali consists of fish curry, fried fish, rice and other yummy side dishes.

Remember to be patient while waiting for your perfect thali. The restaurant is usually busy during the lunch hours, with people eagerly queuing to get an empty table. It's a go-to thali spot for both locals as well as tourists, so you'll need to wait.
