As Goa celebrates its rich cultural exchanges with the world, a striking new exhibition invites visitors to pause and see — not just look.
And so, 'Crossed Glances' is a photography exhibition by Portuguese artist, Paulo Nabais, initiated by the Consulate General of Portugal in Goa and Camoes–Portuguese Language Centre and supported by Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts.
The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Portugal and India, and presents a visual dialogue between the two countries, highlighting realities that are both distinct and connected.
“In today’s world of instant photography consumption, every photo is often seen ‘in a flash’. Yet, the photographs presented here were captured ‘in a flash’ — the right instant.” says the photographer.

Paulo Nabais, Photographer
At the fore, as a viewer, you will see a facial or bodily expression, of the light, the reflections, the background image, and the photographer's momentary interpretation of the scene observed at that moment.
For Nabais, Crossed Glances brings together powerful visuals from both Portugal and India. “The photographs of Portugal and India are the result of extensive travels, capturing the deep social and cultural essence of each country,” Nabais says.
"While Portugal is explored through an ethnographic lens, the images of India — taken during trips in 2018-2019 and 2023 — highlight its diverse people, landscapes, and vibrant everyday life, with colour and light that often echo Portugal,” he adds.
A lens through which the past and present of two distinct yet kindred nations are reflected, here you get to view and travel from the cobbled towns and misty hills of Portugal to the vibrant chaos and soulful quiet of Indian streets.
Nabais tells us, “This body of work offers a real, historical, aesthetic and interpretative record that captures shared perspectives between Portugal and India — past and future — reflecting their relationship with life, heritage, labour and culture.”
These are not postcard-perfect shots, but lived-in moments — portraits of daily life and more offering an outsider’s gaze softened by deep observation and respect.
Thus, here at this exhibition, get to understand how each photograph is a crossed glance — an intersection of cultures, emotions, and historical layers.
The viewer is invited to reflect not just on what separates the two countries, but on what binds them: their enduring heritage, the poetry of everyday life, and the warmth of human expression.
