This week, some hit films of the silver screen will be aired at the Maquinez Palace, in Panjim. The first The Return, is an award-winning Russian film, while the second is a Konkani hit, Nachom-ia Kumpasar.
RUSSIAN FILM, THE RETURN
Goa’s Cinephile Film Club has organised the screening of the 2003-Russian film, The Return, on May 30, 2024 at the Maquinez Palace, Panjim.
This suspense thriller is directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, and stars Vladimir Garin, Ivan Dobronravov and Konstantin Lavronenko. It is of 108 minutes duration with English subtitles.
The Return (Vozvrashchenie) marked the debut of Russian film director, Andrey Zvyagintsev. While it was nominated for the Golden Globe, it bagged the grand prize at the Venice Film Festival.
His subsequent films, like Elena, won the Jury Prize at Cannes, while Leviathan won the Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination.
In a 2016 BBC critics' poll, The Return ranked among the Top 100 greatest films of the 21st century.
This film is about two young brothers, whose father suddenly returns home one fine day after an absence of 12 years.
He takes them on a holiday to a quiet island. They are excited at first, but then things start getting unpleasant.

KONKANI FILM NACHOM-IA KUMPASAR
For those of you who have never watched the Konkani hit Nachom-ia Kumpasar or can’t get enough of it, here’s your chance to watch it on June 1, 2024 at the ESG Theatre in Panjim.
The film has been directed by Bardroy Barretto, and stars Vijay Maurya and Palomi Ghosh in the lead roles.
Set in the 1960s, the film is a tribute to the unsung Konkani musicians of that era and features over 20 popular Konkani songs from the 60s and 70s.
It is the story of a bittersweet relationship between a young singer and her mentor, set against the backdrop of the jazz clubs of Bombay and the musicians from Goa during the 60s.
Nachom-ia Kumpasar has won 24 international, 3 national and 10 state awards, making it the most awarded Konkani film. It was also shortlisted at the 2016 Oscars for Best Picture and Best Original Score.
At VIFF 2016 Vienna Independent Film Festival, the film bagged three awards.
